Changing your furnace filter is one of the easiest ways to improve your home’s air quality, keep your HVAC system running efficiently, and save on energy bills. If it’s been a while since your last filter change, don’t worry—we’ve got you covered with this simple step-by-step guide.
Step 1: Turn Off Your Furnace
Before doing anything, switch off your furnace at the thermostat or breaker. This prevents the system from running while the filter is removed, keeping dust and debris from circulating in your home.
Step 2: Locate Your Furnace Filter
Furnace filters are typically located in one of two places:
-
Inside the blower compartment, behind the front panel
-
In a slot on the side or top of your furnace
If you’re not sure, check your furnace’s manual or look for a panel labeled “Filter.”
Step 3: Remove the Old Filter
Slide the old filter out carefully. Take note of the airflow direction marked on the filter frame—this is important when installing the new one. Dispose of the old filter properly.
Step 4: Choose the Right Replacement Filter
Not all filters are the same. Check the size and type of your current filter before buying a replacement. For a wide selection of high-quality furnace filters, visit our Integrity Heating and Air Filter Store.
Step 5: Install the New Filter
Insert the new filter with the airflow arrow pointing in the same direction as the old one. Make sure it fits snugly in the slot without bending or forcing it.
Step 6: Turn Your Furnace Back On
Once the filter is in place, turn your furnace back on. You should immediately notice improved airflow and cleaner air circulating through your home.
Step 7: Set a Reminder for the Next Change
Most filters should be changed every 1–3 months, depending on usage and filter type. Mark your calendar or set a phone reminder to keep your system running at its best.
