How To Buy the Right Air Conditioner

If you’re in the market for a new air conditioning system, there are several options to choose from. This is a major investment in the future of your home and you need to be comfortable that you’re making the right decision. You also need to make sure that you are hiring the right people to install it. Even top quality AC systems can be a nightmare if they are not installed properly.

Some of the various system options available today:

Central air: This is probably the most common type of air conditioning system in the United States. It is cost-effective and efficient. As a forced air distribution system, it relies on a system of ductwork to circulate the cool air throughout your home. It comprises of two units: an outdoor compressor/condenser and an indoor evaporator/air handler. As air passes through the indoor evaporator coil, the air is cooled and dehumidified. During the dehumidification stage, the moisture is removed from the air becoming a liquid form which then gets collected in a pan located at the bottom of the indoor coil of the air conditioner. The liquid or moisture eventually gets drained outside.

Heat pump: A heat pump works a lot like central air. The one major difference is that it works year-round. Not only does it cool during the summer months by removing air from your home, it also heats during the winter by absorbing the latent heat of the outside air and moving it into your home. It is versatile and highly efficient.

Ductless mini splits: As its name suggests, ductless mini split air conditioners do not require ductwork in your home. This makes them highly efficient because ducts can account for up to 30% of energy loss, especially when they are dirty, cracked, or loose fitting. Ductless systems rely on the same refrigerant cycle, but the indoor air handlers are compact devices that sit directly on the wall of the space you need to cool. You can even outfit your home with several air handlers to customize the temperature in different “zones.” Unlike bulky window air conditioners which block outside views, the indoor units of ductless mini splits are compact and stylish and can be mounted high on the wall, out of the way. Since each indoor unit is only responsible for the comfort of one room, it is typically equipped with convenient features like sleep modes and other customizable options to suit individual preferences. These systems are good for room additions or areas where installation of traditional duct work is not feasible.
