How often should I change my filter?

A. How often to change your furnace filter really depends on a number of factors: Some of the main considerations include:

  • Number of people living in your home- the more people in the home, the more dust and debris that will be floating in the air
  • Recent construction in the home- Dust and debris from drywall and other construction materials will require the filter to be changed more frequently
  • Smokers- The chemicals in smoke can clog up filters.
  • Allergies, Asthma, or other Respiratory or Immune Deficiency- People with these problems need the air to be as clean as possible, and one way to achieve that is through frequent filter changes
  • Quality of filter
  • Pets- Pets have a tendency to shed, which can clog your air filter

Every home is different and how often you are running your equipment, where your house is located and even the style of filter can affect how often you should change your filter. For your standard 1”-3” air filters, the manufacturers basically tell you to change them every 30-60 days, which is actually a great rule of thumb. If you fall into any of the categories above, you should regularly check your filter to see if it requires changing.

How often should I have my system maintenanced?

A. In order for your equipment to function properly, it’s best to have it serviced twice annually, in the spring and the fall.
